Senior Dimensional Engineer — Product Development

Metafold | Hybrid, Toronto preferred

Metafold is building a fundamentally better way to do tolerance analysis. We’re looking for a seasoned dimensional engineer to join a team with deep expertise in geometry, mathematics, and software—and bring practical tolerance analysis expertise to the development of exceptional engineering tools.

You’ll contribute directly to product development, work closely with customers, and represent Metafold in technical conversations throughout the sales cycle. This role suits someone who combines strong engineering judgment with the ability to present clearly, build relationships, and get people working toward a shared goal.

We’re looking for someone excited about where dimensional engineering is heading, eager to keep learning, and ready to help a team of curious people move the field forward.

About Metafold

Metafold is a Toronto-based startup founded by mathematicians, with years of deep technical development behind us. We’re building a new paradigm for tolerance analysis, using advanced geometry to help manufacturers design better products and understand how they will perform. You’ll join a team with a strong technical foundation, ambitious goals, and substantial room to grow—and help shape what comes next.

The role

You’ll bring dimensional engineering expertise to a collaborative product team, applying experience from real products and production environments to next-generation tolerance analysis software.

You will

  • Contribute to product direction: bring a practitioner’s judgment to product priorities, workflows, and capabilities, working closely with our geometry and software teams.
  • Lead technical work: perform and review tolerance and variation analyses, investigate dimensional issues, and recommend practical design or process improvements.
  • Connect variation to performance: help develop workflows that connect tolerance analysis with CAD, finite element analysis (FEA), and other engineering simulation tools.
  • Validate performance: develop representative engineering cases, assess modeling assumptions, and evaluate results against established methods and measurement data.
  • Build customer relationships: understand engineering challenges, lead productive technical discussions, and translate customer feedback into actionable insights.
  • Support the sales cycle: deliver compelling demonstrations and presentations, scope technical evaluations, and explain the engineering and business value of Metafold’s approach.
  • Learn and grow with the team: share expertise, explore new methods, challenge assumptions constructively, and help colleagues deepen their understanding of dimensional engineering.

What you bring

  • Substantial professional experience in dimensional engineering, geometry assurance, or mechanical engineering with significant responsibility for tolerancing and variation analysis.
  • A record of independently resolving dimensional problems in product development and production. You can explain the decisions you made and the results they delivered.
  • Strong applied knowledge of GD&T, datum strategies, tolerance allocation, and assembly variation.
  • Experience with 1D and 3D tolerance analysis, including worst-case and statistical methods, and sound judgment about when to use them.
  • Practical understanding of manufacturing processes, inspection data, and process capability.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and experience working with mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of FEA and engineering simulation software, including model setup, assumptions, boundary conditions, and interpretation of results.
  • Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills. You can lead a room, communicate complex ideas clearly, and build credibility with engineers, managers, and prospective customers.
  • A collaborative approach: you listen carefully, share knowledge, welcome constructive challenge, and take responsibility for shared outcomes.
  • Curiosity about the future of the field and a desire to grow your expertise while helping others grow theirs.
  • This is a senior role requiring demonstrated field experience applying dimensional engineering methods to real products. Coursework and certifications should be supported by practical experience.

Preferred background

  • A degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Electronics or electromechanical product experience, particularly connectors, enclosures, precision assemblies, or electronics packaging.
  • Familiarity with existing tolerance analysis software.
  • Experience in technical consulting, customer-facing engineering, applications engineering, or technical sales support.
  • Experience improving engineering tools or workflows, or collaborating with software development teams.

Location

This is a hybrid position, with a preference for candidates based in Toronto. We will also consider strong candidates elsewhere in Canada, with working arrangements discussed during the hiring process.

Hiring process

  • Introductory interview: discuss your experience, interests, and what you’re looking for, and learn about Metafold and the role.
  • Practical exercise: work through a tolerance analysis problem to demonstrate your approach and engineering judgment.
  • Technical interview: present your exercise results and discuss your reasoning, assumptions, and conclusions with the team.
  • CEO interview: discuss your ambitions, Metafold’s direction, and how you could grow with the company.

Intermediate Software Developer — Geometry & Engineering Applications

Metafold | Hybrid, Toronto preferred

Metafold is building a new paradigm for tolerance analysis software. We’re looking for an intermediate software developer to help us move faster—working alongside our geometry, mathematics, and engineering experts to build and ship the next generation of TA tools.

You’ll join a team with deep expertise in geometry, mathematics, and software, working on challenging problems with direct applications in manufacturing. There is substantial work ahead, and you’ll have the opportunity to own meaningful features, see your work reach customers, and grow alongside experienced colleagues.

This role suits someone who enjoys understanding how things work, translating technical concepts into working software, and carrying a feature through to completion.

The role

You’ll work closely with our mathematicians, software developers, and engineering specialists to expand the capabilities of Metafold’s products. You’ll contribute ideas, make implementation decisions, and help the team move from promising concepts to dependable software.

You will

  • Build and ship features: take well-scoped work from technical discussion through implementation, testing, review, and release.
  • Develop engineering capabilities: implement algorithms and workflows involving 3D geometry, numerical computation, and engineering data.
  • Turn prototypes into production software: work with domain experts to make new methods robust, maintainable, and useful in practice.
  • Improve performance and reliability: investigate bottlenecks, debug difficult problems, and handle the edge cases that arise with real customer data.
  • Help the team deliver faster: improve tests, automation, development tools, and documentation where they remove recurring friction.
  • Collaborate openly: participate in code reviews, explain technical decisions, ask thoughtful questions, and raise problems early.

What you bring

  • Several years of professional software development experience, including contributions to software used by customers or other engineering teams.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ or a comparable compiled language, and the ability to become productive in an existing codebase.
  • A solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, software design, and debugging.
  • Comfort working with mathematical concepts such as vectors, matrices, coordinate transformations, and numerical methods.
  • Experience writing tests, using version control, and collaborating through code review.
  • The ability to break a problem into manageable steps, make sensible tradeoffs, and follow through on delivery.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative approach. You can explain your reasoning and work effectively with people from different technical backgrounds.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to grow. You’re excited to learn from specialists while contributing your own experience and perspective.
  • Experience developing software for CAD, CAE, simulation, robotics, manufacturing, or other technical applications.
  • You should be comfortable delivering defined features independently and seeking input when a problem needs broader expertise.

Preferred background

  • A degree in computer science, software engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, applied mathematics, or a related discipline—or equivalent practical experience.
  • Familiarity with computational geometry, 3D graphics, meshes, or geometric modeling.
  • Experience with Python for prototyping, automation, or scientific computing.
  • Experience profiling and optimizing computationally intensive software.
  • An interest in how software connects to physical products and engineering decisions.
